The use of the materials in the art of painting

In order to obtain an effective handling of the materials, it is necessary to have certain experience that is obtained by practicing with the same materials, nevertheless it is clear that it can get nothing from the practice , if there is no consciousness of the effects which they derive from an action, or a specific previous situation, for that reason, it is assumed that it is the interest of the artistic learning is for each one to develop its own appreciation and expression, and to be able to shape its particular emotions into a picture (or what would it be), I would only like to indicate some points to put attention , and for considering at the time of trying to acquire experience in the handling of the paint.

In order to begin to paint only this knowledge is needed:

  • blue + red = violet, purple, etc
  • blue + yellow = green
  • yellow + red = orange
  • any color + white, loses saturation to white
  • any color + black, loses saturation to black
  • any color + gray, loses saturation to gray

One of the important things to understand is how the combination of colors and tones are related each one to another. I would recommend to choose some deep colors or saturated colors ,and luminous, of your preference, the important thing it is to choose some colors whatever you may like it, and to practice always painting a figure that is attractive to you, first over a white background with a line drawing, and later with a basic uniform color,(I recommend to choose a color that it is the average color of the planned scene), also I recommend this things: to mix more than two colors before its application, also superposing it, and using colors diluted with some means, (painting on a dry layer or humid layer ) and to analyze the effect that the colors has in proximity of others .Trying different combinations until being able to understand the effects that follows one to another, and to be able to invent, and to define the colors mentally accurately.
To recognize the reaction of the material in the different surfaces, and how it affects the different kinds of brushes, according to its class. Nonetheless this it is also important to be able to analyze the work of other artists of the past, to appreciate the way they used the brushstrokes ,watching in close range, and observe by far the contrast level that they distributed throughout the painting (it is necessary to understand it and not to copy it)

I have only experimented with acrylic painting, and the unique reasons I can think for recommend the acrylic painting before others, would be: because it is possible to be diluted with water and being used in similar way as watercolors, (and also with other medium) in addition because they are obtained from smaller price, and mainly because they dry faster.
Perhaps the previous description could be applied to other questions, since it is a simple recommendation to for each one to know, and understand the limitations and advantages of each medium, and most of all to learn the qualities of the materials, and to remember the obtained effects, and so being able to use them in the best way according to is desired…
